Dr Gareth White defines immersion as a perceptual and psychological state shaped by spatial orientation and attention.  Dr Josephine Machon emphasises embodiment and audience journey. Language evolves because practice evolves. Immersive is not a perfect word, but it is a useful one. It sets expectations. It signals intent. It allows different disciplines to speak to one another.  To quote Joe Lycett, “not everything is immersive” But that does not invalidate the term. Language evolves alongside practice. Immersion exists on a spectrum, the word will continue to stretch as the work itself stretches.</image:caption>

Being a woman and a mother has shaped my leadership in ways I value deeply. It honed my instincts around audience needs, emotion, access, play, and connection. It made my thinking more intuitive, more inclusive, and more human. These qualities are not soft skills. They are creative advantages. This is not an attack on our industry. It is a reflection of lived experience backed by data. There are brilliant organisations already getting this right. The goal is not to point fingers but to raise the standard until that becomes the norm everywhere.</image:title>

True accessibility means designing for: Mobility and physical access: step-free routes, seating options, accessible toilets, and venue layouts that consider wheelchairs, walking aids, and fatigue Sensory needs: reducing overstimulation, offering sensory maps, chill-out areas, and moments of calm, this can be as simple as having pre-engagement documents available to let people know what to expect, or offering relaxed sessions or performance, we are seeing a lot of this and I'm here for it. Cognitive and communication differences: clear signage, friendly staff, plain-language information, and predictable structure, how can you make this suitable for those with sight or hearing issues too? Neurodivergent experience: designing for ADHD, autism, anxiety and sensory processing differences, not as an add-on, but as part of the core brief. It also means giving people choices about how they engage. No pressure to perform. No shame in stepping out. Just a space that feels welcoming, flexible, and thoughtfully built, we can't do it all but we can try, don't make accessibility an after thought, it needs to be considered from the very first stages of planning.</image:caption>

The internal logic of the world, the backstory, the rules, all of it matters. It acts as an invisible backbone. When everyone designing, performing, or producing knows why things are the way they are, the experience becomes richer, more coherent, more alive. Audiences might not be able to articulate the story, but they’ll feel it. They’ll sense that this world makes sense. They’ll trust it. They’ll lean in.</image:caption>
